We’ve been hearing a lot about the “OMG” remix coming out on December 4, 2015. I have personally loved Todd Carey’s original release of “OMG” from the beginning and the remix has blown my mind! So who is the guy behind this masterful new version of one of my favorite songs and how did he and Todd get connected? I was able to mix it up with J and am excited to share with you the fun story.

In ten words or less tell the #ToddSquad who J Farell is?

The music producer from the future.

When did you first hear “OMG” and what about it made you want to remix it?

About a month ago, I was wrapping up my remix of Max’s song “Gibberish,” and I posted an Instagram video of me producing it in the studio. Todd ended up liking the video. I went over to Todd’s profile on Twitter and clicked on the link for his newest single “OMG.” I was groovin’ to it for about a minute when I starting thinking that I’d love to add my flair to the song to really give it something people can dance to. I immediately tweeted Todd, “I wanna remix ‘OMG’,” and the rest is history.

What goes into remixing a song that’s already on the radio?

I like to think of remixing as my sixth sense. I hear a song on the radio, and sometimes I can begin to hear different instruments behind the vocals. It could be a new drum beat or entirely new background music. I’ll start humming the new melody that’s in my head or beatboxing the drum beat. When I get really inspired, I’ll download the original song into my production software and produce a demo using my drum pad and piano keys. A lot of the time, I know it’s gonna be something special when I start dancing to my own music. Then, I’ll send the demo over to my connections at the record labels to see if they want to sign a deal for the remix. When the label likes it, they’ll send me the original vocal recording session from the artist. Over this past summer, I produced the official “Good For You” remix for Selena Gomez, and it was awesome getting to work with her vocals from her studio recording session.

In addition to remixing, do you write your own music?

I’ve written and produced thousands of original beats and melodies over the years, and I’m always collaborating with singers, rappers, and vocalists.

If you weren’t into music, what do you think you might be doing with your life?

I would be a storm chaser in a pickup truck chasing tornadoes in Kansas and Oklahoma. I get such a rush when the sky turns black, and I love feeling that electricity in the air! I know it’s super dangerous, but it’s always been on my bucket list.

What’s your favorite line in “OMG” and why?

“You think you’re so smart, you got a breaking hearts degree.” I love how tongue-in-cheek this line is!

Have you ever had a relationship like the one described in “OMG”?

Definitely. I’d be lying if I said it never happened, but I still follow my heart so that I don’t repeat the past

Thank you, J, for taking the time to answer these questions and give the #ToddSquad an inside look at how the remix came to be. We can’t wait to see the world’s reaction!
